#8 Duck — Greige

#8 is where things start getting serious. Often called “18 oz” duck in the trade, this weight actually measures approximately 17.7 oz/sq.yd — the duck you reach for when the job involves sharp tools, heavy loads, or rough handling. It’s also stocked in the dyed “Hera” collection — because even tough fabrics deserve a little style. It sits right where the lightweight ducks tap out and the heavyweights start paying attention. Not the biggest, not the smallest, just the one that gets called up most often. #8 doesn’t need to brag. The repeat orders do that for it.

Trivia:

Back in the early 2000s, Palisades Textiles in Rhode Island ran a dyeing and finishing mill that had been operating for decades. Prestige wasn’t around yet — one of our team members was working elsewhere, at a company that’s long since faded from the scene. Palisades bought nearly three truckloads of #8 Duck in 48″ width. They bleached it, printed on it, and shipped it to L.L.Bean — a company not known for accepting “good enough.” It worked. The fabric held the print, met the standards, and ended up in products that outlasted the mill itself. Palisades is gone. That old supplier is a memory. L.L.Bean is still here. So is #8.
