Single Fill Duck

Untreated Cotton Canvas Ducks

Single Fill Ducks are the lighter, more versatile cousins of the Number Ducks. Mostly single yarns in the fill direction — hence the name. Not as heavy. Not as intense. But they show up in more places than you’d expect. Upholstery. Aprons. Tote bags. Tarps. The kind of fabrics that don’t brag about themselves but somehow end up everywhere.

Weights run from 7 oz to 15 oz per square yard. Widths from 36 inches to 144 inches. And a small confession upfront: none of these fabrics weigh exactly what the name says. We’ll explain as we go.

This is our most popular cotton duck in the lightweight category. And here’s the first thing you should know: a 7 oz Single Fill Duck is never 7 oz. It weighs about 6.5 oz/sq.yd. We’ve been selling it this way for 15+ years and still don’t have a good answer for why. Textile naming conventions are a mystery. We’ve made our peace with it.

A “true” 7 oz is possible — custom production, higher minimums, longer lead time, and a bit more expensive. But the 84×28 construction is what the world actually uses. It’s the one that shows up in upholstery, tote bags, aprons, shoe liners, kitchen textiles, and home furnishings. 7 oz is just about everywhere. The only limit is your imagination.

Where it goes: Upholstery. Tote bags. Aprons. Lamination. Shoes. Kitchen textiles. Home furnishings. It’s the fabric equivalent of a character actor. Never the lead. In every scene.

10 Oz. SF A

10 Oz. SF AB

Same story as the 7 oz: a 10 oz Single Fill Duck is never 10 oz. It weighs about 9.3 oz/sq.yd. We’ve been selling it this way forever and still don’t know why the name stuck. At this point, we’re not asking questions. We’re just filling orders.

This is our staple seller. Available in two grades — “A” grade if you’re dyeing it, “AB” grade if you’re not. We also have a  Zen 10 oz dyed stock program with 30+ colors, because some people like their workhorse with a little flair.  A “true” 10 oz is a custom job. Higher minimums. Longer lead times. Pricier.  But the 76×28 construction is what the market actually uses, and it’s probably what you need.

Where it goes: Tote bags. Agricultural covers. Aprons. Tarps. Safety vests. Drop cloths. Artist canvas. Not the flashiest fabric we make. Just the one that pays for the warehouse.

12 Oz. Single Fill Duck – 100% Cotton

  • Construction: Yarns : 10’s OE x 4’s OE
  • Thread Count: 76×29
  • Weight: ~11.4 Oz./Sq.Yd (387 gsm)
  • Grade: “AB” Grade – non dyeable.
  • Stock Widths: 36″/48″/60″ &  72″
  • Description: Everything the 10 oz does, with a little more backbone. And a little less patience.

By now you know the drill. A 12 oz Single Fill Duck is never 12 oz. It weighs about 11.4 oz/sq.yd. We’ve stopped trying to explain textile math. A “true” 12 oz is a custom job — higher minimums, longer lead times, and a bigger invoice. The 76×29 is what gets the work done. This is where Single Fill Ducks start to feel less like a lightweight and more like a material that means it. Mining bags. Industrial covers. Agricultural tarps. The kind of applications where the fabric gets ordered, not admired.

Where it goes: Mining bags. Industrial covers. Nail aprons. Agricultural tarps. Drop cloths. Jobs where “good enough” gets someone in trouble.

14.9 Oz. Single Fill Duck – Eco Grade

  • Construction: Yarns : 7’s /2 OE x 7’s OE
  • Thread Count: 52×30
  • Weight: ~14.4 Oz./Sq.Yd (485 gsm)
  • Grade: “AB” Grade – non dyeable.
  • Stock Widths: 36″ & 48″
  • Description: The heavyweight with a conscience.

Let’s address the name first. It’s called 14.9 oz. It weighs about 14.4 oz. By now, this should not surprise you. We’ve all grown as people since the 7 oz section.  This one’s a hybrid — plied yarns in the warp, single yarns in the fill. Woven on old shuttle looms, so it has that genuine canvassy texture that modern machines can’t quite replicate. It feels like fabric used to feel.

And here’s the part that matters: it’s eco-friendly. A cotton-rich blend with polyester fibers recycled from plastic bottles. Compared to a 100% cotton equivalent, this fabric has higher tensile and tear strength. It’s not just better for the planet. It’s better for the job.

One thing to know: Eco Grade takes coatings beautifully. Dyeing? Not so much. If you want to know why, ask us. We have a whole explanation ready. It involves chemistry. We’ll keep it short.

Where it goes: Wax-treated tarps. Machinery covers. Cattle dust panels. Rugged outdoor applications where the weather’s rude and the fabric needs to be ruder.
