The WWII Jeep Cover That Had to Be Authentic

Emelie N, Simproducts — Shumway, Illinois

The Challenge

Emelie approached us in October 2025 with a problem that had nothing to do with spec sheets — at least not on her end. She was restoring a WWII jeep cover and needed fabric that matched the original in feel, smell, and look. The restored product had to be historically accurate down to the smallest detail.

She didn't come from the fabric industry. She didn't know the spec. But we did. And we knew we had to stick to it.

All she had was a faded fabric sample from a converter who had likely retired. She just knew it had to be right.

The Solution

The following week, we met Emelie at the IFAI trade show in Indianapolis. Kevin Lee from Buckeye Fabrics happened to be there. Will, Emelie's lead sewer, was there too — he knew what would work and what wouldn't. The four of us stood around that sample and worked it out together: what the original finish might have been, how to replicate it, what weight would drape right.

There was no spec sheet to reference. So we back-tested the fabric — reverse-engineered the construction and weight to understand exactly what we were dealing with. Once we knew what the base fabric was, we could figure out what finish would sit on it correctly.

Shelia McConnel at Buckeye Fabrics helped Steve all along with historical samples and was instrumental in matching the finish. We supplied an 18 oz cotton duck (#8), applied the matched finish with a few in-house adjustments, and sent it to Emelie.

The Result

It worked. The fabric looked right. It felt right. It smelled right. Emelie's restoration moved forward with material that honored the original WWII specifications.
